Darmanto's research projects focuses on the transformation of indigenous people's lives and their environment. He combines environmental and cultural anthropology to examine the change and continuity of food production and consumption and its relations with ecological conditions and social change among Mentawaians on Siberut Island, West Sumatra.

He is familiar with Siberut since he conducted research on ecological aspects of Mentawaian swidden agriculture for his undergraduate thesis at Gadjah Mada University in 2004. After that he worked for UNESCO's field projects under the Man and Biosphere (MaB) framework (2005-2011). He also established Perkumpulan Siberut Hijau (PASIH), a Siberut-based environmental NGO, and coordinated it for the periods 2006 to 2009.

Darmanto's other research interests include nature conservation issues, indigenous movements, and agrarian transition in upland Indonesia. He is particularly interested in political ecology and cultural politics perspective. He recently deployed both of the frameworks to elaborate the history of Siberut Rain Forest contestation on his recent book Berebut Hutan Siberut: Orang Mentawai, Kekuasaan dan Politik Ekologi (2012). In addition, he is also interested on the socio-politic aspects of football, the sport that he does love to play, watch, and write about.
