Ahmad Nuril Huda (1983) completed his bachelor’s degree (2004) in Arabic Language and Literature at UIN Maliki Malang,. He obtained his master’s degree, thanks to TIYL programme, in Islamic Studies (2010) at Leiden University.
Ahmad Nuril Huda is currently working on his PhD research that started in December 2010. His research focuses on Islamic films and cinematic practices of Muslims in contemporary Indonesia. More specifically, it questions the meanings of the production, circulation and reception of Indonesian Islamic films, by looking into the different actors agencies and discourses that shape the negotiating processes of defining what is and is not Islamic about film. Furthermore the project examines the representation of Islam in Indonesian Islamic films, it maps out the audiences of these films, and it researchers if these films are able to create a Muslim (counter) public. In the end, the project will show the ways these films help to understand the transformative meanings of being Muslim in contemporary modern Indonesia.
