Thijs Jan van Schie completed his master’s degree in Cultural Anthropology and Development Sociology at Leiden University in 2006. His master research focused on livelihood strategies and cultural identity of Peruvian immigrants in Santiago de Chile. Also in 2006, he completed his educational master in teaching social studies at the Leiden University Graduate School of Teaching (ICLON).
After 2006 Thijs Jan has been working in various education institutes, teaching different subjects: teaching social studies in a secondary school in Leiden; teaching cultural anthropology, sociology, and qualitative social research methods at the Catholic University of Malawi; and developing a course of medical anthropology for eight Vietnamese universities, commissioned by the Hanoi Medical University and the Medical Committee Netherlands-Vietnam (MCNV).
Currently Thijs Jan works at the Institute of Cultural Anthropology and Development Sociology at Leiden University, as internship coordinator and teaching assistant. His tasks and duties include: the coordination of internships in both the Netherlands and abroad, the design and coordination of the course 'orientation on study and career for anthropology students', the teaching of tutorials and supervision of BA theses.
