- Anthropology and history of landscape, nature and development, Kenya, Akamba, nature in the Netherlands
Maarten Onneweer’s research interests are in the anthropology of landscape, the anthropology of development, and the history of development. Currently he works as a PhD student on a project entitled "The social life of springs: encountering landscapes of spirits and development in the Kitui district Kenya". The project focuses on water sources where colonial improvement schemes or more recent development projects took place (or were to take place). It aims to bring history and locality into the anthropology of development; to show how water development in Kitui is locally produced or denied by previous encounters or the vagaries of the arid Kitui landscape. The research combines fieldwork amongst water development organisation and local communities with archival research.
Besides this project, Maarten Onneweer writes on Dutch nature conservation, and particularly recent trends in nature management such as the construction of nature landscapes and the staging of nature landscapes.
