Under Construction: New Scopus Journal Classification
CWTS is developing a new journal classification scheme for Scopus to replace the current one. This scheme will cover over 17,000 journals and other sources and it will be structured in two levels. The conceptual basis of this new scheme will be bibliometric. The scheme is scheduled September 2010.
CWTS and Elsevier/ Scopus
Elsevier and CWTS have a long-standing tradition of collaboration. Over 20 years, CWTS has developed and discussed tool and methods for Elsevier to meet user needs. A recent information product CWTS developed for Scopus is the impact measure for journals (SNIP).
CWTS and SNIP
SNIP is a measure to assess the impact or influence of a journal. It is constructed in such a way that it normalizes for field citation characteristics. A ‘start’ version of SNIP has already been published, but research continues at CWTS to further strengthen the index and explore the possibilities to deal with potential weaknesses.
