The Netherlands Observatory of Science and Technology (NOWT) focuses on the collection and analysis of figures about the Dutch research system in a broad sense, including interfaces with public information services related to science, the higher education system, and the technological innovation system.

The CWTS and UNU-MERIT researchers (involved in NOWT studies) concentrate mainly on the position and performance of the Netherlands in an international comparative context with the emphasis on recent trends and topical long-term developments.

About NOWT

The Netherlands Observatory of Science and Technology (NOWT) is a formal cooperation between the Centre for Science and Technology Studies (CWTS) linked to the University of Leiden and the Maastricht Economic Research Institute on Innovation and Technology (UNU-MERIT) of Maastricht University. This cooperation is funded by the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science (Directorate Research and Science Policy).

The NOWT reports

Up till now NOWT has published eight Science and Technology Indicators Reports (between 2005 and 2010) presenting its analytical work, all of them in Dutch but accompanied by a separate summary in English. NOWT's STI reports play a major role in the information chain to S&T policymakers in the Netherlands.
