ADOC Research: Medical Special Needs Adoptions

July 2013 Gera ter Meulen from ADOC presented the results of the research project on Special Needs Adoptions from Taiwan at the 4th International Conference on Adoption Research in Bilbao, Spain.

Since 1989 about half of the adoptions from Taiwan to the Netherlands were Special Needs Adoptions. Adoptions from Taiwan were from good homes, at a young age and Taiwan has excellent medical services. Much is known from the medical history of the adoptees and their parents. The Dutch adoption organization Meiling wished to evaluate their adoptions from Taiwan and asked ADOC to make a survey on how the adoptees with and without do. Additionally the adoptive parents were asked how the special needs influenced the upbringing of their adopted children. Results from the study
