Monique Boekaerts studied psychology in the UK. She was a full professor, first at Nijmegen university (1980-1990) and later at Leiden University (1991-2011), where she held the chair of Learning and Instruction. After her retirement, she became a guest professor in the same department.

Boekaerts has played a leading role in the development of the motivation and self-regulation constructs. She built up a national and international reputation for the development and application of her dual processing self-regulation model . For many years she was the principal investigator of the Platform for School Innovation in Secondary Vocational Education in the Netherlands.

Boekaerts is a founding member of the European Association of Learning and Instruction. She was president of EARLI (1999-2001), president of the Division of Educational, Instructional and School Psychology of the International Association of Applied Psychology (IAAP, 1998-2002), and president of the International Academy of Education (IAE).
