Astrid Kraal obtained her master’s degree in Applied Linguistics in 1993 at the Faculty of Humanities at Utrecht University. After her graduation she started working at the CED-Groep, an organization which focuses on the innovation of educational practices by developing learning materials, training and coaching teachers and by performing educational research. She developed interventions for Dutch as a second language, and reading comprehension.

She is co-founder and -author of Nieuwsbegrip, an innovative intervention for reading comprehension, based on topical matters. Astrid Kraal is PhD candidate in the Brain and Education Lab at Leiden University since 2012.

'Texts that teach and readers that learn: The role of text characteristics and children's reading skills in comprehending and learning from informational texts'

The project aims to identify factors that determine the success or failure of elementary school children to comprehend and learn from informational texts. The goal is to investigate the role of text characteristics and children’s reading skills as well as possible interactions between text and reader properties in children’s ability to learn from informational texts.
