Who can win the prize?
The prize is awarded to staff members who have generated public interest in their field of study by presenting their work in an appealing way while still upholding their scientific standards.
Who was Piet Vroon?
Piet Vroon (1939-1998) was a well-known scientist who brought the behavioural sciences to the attention of the general public. He published books for a wide audience, had a weekly column in a national newspaper and appeared regularly on radio and television. His aim was to make well-founded scientific information available to a large audience.
He was professor of Psychology at Leiden University and has long been the chair of the sub-department of Philosophical and Empirical Educational Studies.
What may be done with the prize money?
The prize winner receives a challenge trophy and €5,000. The money must be used for teaching or research within the Institute of Education and Child Studies of Leiden University. This might include:
- hiring student assistants
- attending scientific conferences abroad
- buying research equipment, etc.
Is there an expiry date?
The prize money must be spent within two years, otherwise the entitlement lapses. The Executive Board must approve how the money is spent.
