7 December, 2010: Food for Thought
At the 11th 'Food for Thought' session the speakers are Naomi Ellemers (Psychology) and Anchrit Wille (Public Administration).
Aim
The aim of these informal meetings is to provide an opportunity to hear about colleagues' research projects, questions, and methods. The dean hopes that this meeting will see the same fruitful interdisciplinary interaction as the previous ones. The presentations and discussions are in English.
Programme
Naomi Ellemers (Psychology): 'Moral values as a source of social identity'
In this presentation I will consider moral values as a relevant source of social identity. This complements existing approaches that examine group dynamics and inter-group relations primarily in terms of differential competences and resource control. I will present recent data to examine the psychological processes indicating the specific implications of shared moral values for people’s social identities. These data include self-reported emotions and goal achievement strategies, as well as more implicit and less controllable (psycho-physiological) indicators of task motivation and performance monitoring. This not only indicates how moral values impact on the way group members process information about themselves and others, but also elucidates how this affects their motivational goals and behavioural strategies in social interactions and during task accomplishment.
Anchrit Wille (Public Administration): 'Diploma Democracy'
The well educated currently comprise less than a third of the population, yet they dominate every political venue in the Netherlands. Their voices resonate stronger in the ballot box, are heard more loudly in campaigns for participation and protest, and are absolutely dominant in interest groups, deliberative settings, Parliament and Cabinet. In this lunch presentation Anchrit Wille (Public Administration) explains how the less educated have virtually disappeared from most political arenas in the Netherlands and explores what this means for democracy.
