NWO funding for Peter Pels

NWO grant

Professor Peter Pels (Cultural Anthropology and Development Sociology) has received, together with co-applicant Prof. dr. Chris Goto-Jones funding for ‘The Future is Elsewhere: Toward a Comparative History of the Futures of the Digital (R)evolution’ within the Cultural Dynamics programme of NOW (€450.000).

Included in the project

• one PhD project studying the development of major digital environments in Southeast Asia,
• a Postdoc position studying feminist ideals and practices of digital education in the USA and the Netherlands, and
• 0,5 fte senior researcher substitution for finalizing a study of imaginations of the future in European and North American science fiction.

Joint publication

Pels and Goto-Jones (the latter received a VICI for similar research in science fiction and digital development in Japan) will turn the central focus of both their projects (imaginations of the future and their social/political role in development) into a joint publication by 2014.
