Leiden University - Campus The Hague invites you to participate in our challenging academic Summer Courses in the period between June 22 till August 21, 2009.  They are organized and hosted by Campus The Hague, in close cooperation with the Leiden University faculties of Law and Humanities, and with the Montesquieu Institute. 


International Criminal Law (June 22 – July 3, 2009)

The presence of various international courts and tribunals in The Hague, such as the International Criminal Court (ICC), the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY), creates a dynamic environment where students will not only learn about international criminal law in theory, but can also actually see international criminal law in action.

The Fight against Terrorism and Radicalization (June 22- July 3, 2009)

Students will gain insight in the most recent developments in the study of terrorism and radicalization. The course addresses the questions of why people engage in terrorism, and how to prevent people from adopting extremist beliefs and engaging in ideologically inspired violence.

Public and Private Roles in Internet Governance (July 6 – 17, 2009)

This summer course will discuss the shifting roles in governance of the internet. It will focus on several themes: Regulating Internet, Internet and Democracy, Internet and ideas, Internet and Security, Internet and Commerce, and Internet and Individual Freedom.

Good Governance, Rule of Law and Development: Focus on Africa (July 6 – 17, 2009)

This course will provide in-depth knowledge of the functioning of law, politics and public administration in the African context. It will include topical subjects such as the implementation of rule of law and good governance programmes; law and governance in situations of large scale conflict and state failure; and legal empowerment of the poor.

Holding Europe to account (August 10 - 21, 2009)

This course focuses on Europe and deals with the various accountability relations amongst actors in the European political arena and the way European policies and accountability is seen by the United States.

Course information

The Summer Courses are open to international students from all over the world and are primarily designed for advanced bachelor students (sophomores and higher). On a small scale, professionals with an academic background are also welcome to register.

The courses will last two weeks each, consisting of intensive lecture, debate and study. Field trips and excursions related to the topics will also be included, as well as an attractive social program. Renowned academics will contribute to the Summer Courses, as will professionals with specific expertise in the field. Successful completion of assignments will result in 3-5 credits of the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS).
