People do not stop learning after and they have finished their regular education. Rapid technological developments and changing society make lifelong learning necessary. Learning takes place in training sessions and courses, but also in the workplace or when someone changes jobs or positions. More and more workplace turns into a learning environment. Both companies and governments recognize the importance of lifelong learning.
In 2000 EU ministers stated that the EU should be the most competitive economy in the future. Adult education in the form of lifelong learning plays a very important role in that process. PLATO conducts research for the European Commission on adult education practitioners in Europe.
