Bart-Jan Heine is a PhD candidate at the Institute of Political Science since February 2011. He worked as a policy researcher at Research voor Beleid for one year. In 2007, he earned a bachelors degree in Human Geography. This was followed by a (research) masters degree in Public Administration and Organizational Science in 2009 at Utrecht University. 

Currently, he is doing research within the research profile ‘political legitimacy’. His PhD research focuses on the legitimacy of the political rules of the game in the Netherlands after the Second World War. His research interest includes legitimacy, consociational democracy, (de-)pillarization, and polarization in politics.
