Marijn Nagtzaam is a PhD candidate at the Institute of Political Science of Leiden University since September 2014. Prior to starting his PhD track, he studied political science at Leiden University as a research master student, receiving his MSc degree. He also obtained a BEc after studying Business economics, Finance and Accounting.
His PhD research is focused on ‘Second-Order Electoral personalization’. His study will look in more detail at intra-party preference voting, its causes and its consequences. The central questions of the study are which voters are inclined to cast a preference vote, which institutional context elicits preference voting, and which candidates tend to receive preference votes. Furthermore, the study will look at the consequences of preference voting for the further political career and behaviour of the recipient candidates.
