Cynthia van Vonno (MPhil)
is a teaching instructor in international relations at the Institute of Political Science. She also teaches courses in international politics at Leiden University College The Hague. She is the 2013 winner of the Casimirprijs, the Leiden University Faculty of Social and Behavioral Sciences prize for teaching excellence.
Cynthia van Vonno is also a PhD candidate at the Institute of Political Science. Her research is in the area of representation studies, specifically focusing on the pathways to party unity, for which she developed and tested a sequential decision making model that MPs apply when determining whether to vote according to the party line. Her research includes an analysis of the determinants of party unity and voting behavior in the Dutch Parliament through time, a comparison of the determinants of party unity at the national, provincial and municipal level in the Netherlands, and a comparative analysis of the effects of institutions on MPs’ decision making in 15 parliamentary democracies. She is a member of international PartiRep project, for which she organized and executed the data-collection of the Comparative MP Survey in the Netherlands at the national, provincial and municipal level.
In the future, Cynthia plans to parlay her expertise in representation theory and her knowledge of international politics.
