Neuropsychology - Introduction of the field

Neuropsychologists are interested in the relation between brain and behaviour and the disorders that may arise in this area. The use of this knowledge in the assessment and treatment of patients who are suspected of having a brain disease is the field of the Clinical Neuropsychologist.

Academic Neuropsychology in Leiden is embedded within the Psychology department of the Faculty of Social Sciences (since 2001) and within the department of Neurology of the Leiden University Medical Centre (since 1958). 

Professor H.A.M. Middelkoop (clinical neuropsychologist) is the first chair holder in Clinical Neuropsychology at Leiden University. Together with his staff members he is responsible for education, (patient-based) research and patient care (LUMC) within the field of Clinical Neuropsychology.

The  focus of our research lies on the pathophysiology, epidemiology, diagnostics and treatment of patients with a neuropsychological disorder, and includes both children as well as adults and elderly patients.
