“We know about emotional impairments in deaf children, but we have very little knowledge about the impact of a CI on children’s emotional development.”

Lizet Ketelaar is a PhD student in the unit Developmental and Educational Psychology of the Institute of Psychology at Leiden University.

She obtained her master’s degree in developmental psychology from Leiden University. She successfully co-applied for a 4-year “Care for Youth” grant from ZonMw.

Her current research focuses on the social and emotional development of young deaf children wearing a cochlear implant (CI). Various aspects of emotional development are being researched, including recognition of other’s emotions and emotion expression. Aspects of the social domain include the development of pride, shame and frustration, as well as the development of (precursors of) theory of mind. CI children are matched with controls and both groups are being followed for a period of 4 years, thus providing both cross-sectional and longitudinal data.
