Carolien Rieffe is a professor by special appointment in the unit Developmental and Educational Psychology of the Institute of Psychology at Leiden University.

She received her MSc Degree in Psychological Methodology from the University of Amsterdam, and her PhD for her studies on the child’s theory of mind and emotions from the VU University Amsterdam. Before she came to Leiden University, she worked as assistant professor at the VU University, Amsterdam and as a lecturer at the University of London, School of Education. 

Her current research focuses on the use of emotion regulation skills (e.g. emotion awareness, coping, display rules, anger expression) during childhood and adolescence in typical and atypical development (autism, deafness, somatisation, and cultural differences). Carolien teaches social and emotional development, (A)typical emotional development and Designing an empirical study. She coordinates the Research Master’s Course.
