Jessanne Mastop graduated in May 2006 in Social & Organizational Psychology at Leiden University. Currently she is working as a PhD Candidate at the department of Social and Organizational Psychology at Leiden University under the supervision of Mariëlle Stel and Eric van Dijk. The subject of her project is nonverbal behavior and its consequences towards people with high and low status.
Research
Her research focuses on reactions to nonverbal behavior. Previous research distinguishes two types of reactions: Mimicry and Complementary behavior. Mimicking is doing the same as the other person, while complementing is doing the opposite of what the other person is doing. It is suggested that both reactions are automatic and have positive consequences. Until now, however, it is not known when people mimic or complement. The current research focuses on this question and investigates whether status and power play a role in this.
