Elise Seip obtained her Cognitive Science Master in 2007 at the Institute for Interdisciplinary Studies (IIS) of the University of Amsterdam (UvA). In September 2007 she started her dissertation research under supervision of Dr. Mark Rotteveel, Dr. Wilco W. van Dijk and Prof. Agneta Fischer. In this project she investigated desire for vengeance. In 2012 she was a visiting researcher at Lasana Harris’s lab at Duke University. Currently she is a teacher at Leiden University.

Research

Elise Seip focuses in her research on desire for vengeance. She investigated why and when people develop a desire for vengeance. Desire for vengeance is elicited in response to unfair treatment or when one’s self-worth is threatened. It is an emotion that motivates revenge, but not necessarily leads to actual taking revenge. The question is what does predict revenge behavior. The norm supported by a asocial environment is likely to have an influence on whether people take revenge. When it is more accepted—or even expected—to take revenge people might be more likely to actually take revenge. In addition, she investigated the different emotions that accompany desire for vengeance and revenge. Avengers experienced satisfaction, but also shame and guilt. Revenge, therefore, seems to be a mixed blessing.

In her research she uses paradigms based on economic games (trust-game, dictator game).
