Marjolein Fokkema wrote her PhD thesis at the VU University in Amsterdam, on the application of statistical learning algorithms and latent variable models for improving the efficiency and accuracy of assessments in clinical psychology. Most of her research involves the application and development of recursive partitioning, or tree-based, methods. These methods may be used, for example, to find subgroups at risk for developing a mental disorder, or to find subgroups of patients that will respond more favorably to psychotherapy than pharmacotherapy (and the other way around). A second research interest is the application of latent variable models, for example to detect response shift bias in data from clinical trials.
