Curriculum Vitae

Véronique De Gucht (1966) completed her Masters in Clinical and Developmental Psychology (summa cum laude) in 1989 and obtained an advanced degree in
Cognitive Behaviour Therapy in 1999. She received her PhD in 2001 on the basis of a thesis entitled "Neuroticism, alexithymia, negative affect and positive affect as predictors of medically unexplained symptoms in primary care." She has been a Lecturer in Health Psychology at Leiden University since 2002.

Main Research Interest

My research can be situated within the broad domain of Clinical Health Psychology and consists of two different, but related research areas. The first one is the study of predictors (e.g. personality, cognitive and emotional processes and behavioural aspects) of the development and persistence of somatoform disorders (e.g. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Irritable Bowel Syndrome) and medically unexplained physical symptoms (MUPS) in general. A second research area is the development and implementation of interventions in patients suffering both from chronic diseases (e.g. Rheumatoid Arthritis, Coronary Heart Disease), somatoform disorders and chronic pain. The guiding principles for these interventions are derived from Cognitive-Behavioural Models as well as self-regulation theory.

Ancillary Positions
