Danielle Hamstra studied at Leiden University, where she graduated in 2013 in Clinical and Health Psychology (Research). In her PhD research she aims to contribute to the personalized treatment of depression in women. She is also a teacher at the department of Clinical Psychology.

Research topic

The mineralocorticoid receptor haplotype, female hormones and cognitive-affective processes associated with depression.

Current research

Why are women more vulnerable to mood disorders than men? Depression is the result of an inability to cope with stressors. The genetically determined sensitivity of the mineralocorticoid  receptor (MR haplotype) plays an important role in this process. Currently we are investigating the relation between the MR haplotype, depression and female hormones in both healthy volunteers and clinical samples.

In our previous research we found coincidentally that oral contraceptives alter the detection of emotions in facial expressions. A follow-up study revealed that the impact of OCs on emotional information processing is moderated by MR-haplotype. Our latest study showed that these genes also influence the impact of the menstrual cycle on emotional cognition.
