"Naturally, we are social creatures. Why then are social situations so anxiety provoking and distressing for some people and not for others?"

Anne C. Miers is a Post Doc at the unit Developmental and Educational Psychology of the Institute of Psychology at Leiden University. She received her PhD in March 2010. She obtained her Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology at University College London, and her Master of Science degree in Child Development at the Institute of Education, London. Her focus was on the contribution of anger coping styles to somatic complaints in children and adolescents.

Her current research focuses on interpersonal and intrapersonal influences at school as predictors of social fear in adolescents. More specifically, the project longitudinally investigates the effect of peer evaluation and negative perceptions in a school speech task to the development of social fear in youth aged 9-17 years. For a full description of her research programme, see: Adolescents.
